It's suppposed to smell bad! January 8, 2009 Dave (CA) For crying out loud! Have you people never smelled tea tree oil before? I guarantee you, that if you used a previous tea tree oil product that *didn't* smell like "turpentine", then it had hardly any tea tree oil in it, and you got ripped off. Try this: next time you're at the health food store, go to the "essential oils" section, find a bottle of pure tea tree oil ("Desert Essence" is a good brand), and smell it. You will get the "turpentine" smell, in spades. So why do I use it? Tea tree oil is a natural anti-bacterial, and I use it constantly to "de-germ" my hands. It rinses clean--unlike commercial anti-bacterial soaps that leave an overwhelming perfume-y smell that takes hours to dissipate--and does not create the same problems as using a commercial anti-bacterial soap does: i.e., creating a "super-bacteria" that can't be killed. The other, "pretty" smelling Bronner's soaps will do a fine job of cleaning your skin, but if you have a need for a natural anti-bacterial--as I do--then buy Bronner's Tea Tree, dilute it about 6:1 w/water, and put it in a pump bottle. Hold your breath if you don't like the smell.
Great soap, horrible smell December 23, 2008 Patty Philly (Philadelphia, PA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
First of all, Dr. Bronner's is the best soap on the face of the planet. It can be a little drying, but you'll never feel cleaner and it's a true soap - just oils and lye, with a little vitamin E and citric acid. No foaming agents or perfumes and non-polluting. It's concentrated, so a little goes a long way. Also, it really does have (at least!) 18 uses. I've used it as body and hand soap, shampoo, laundry detergent and stain remover, window cleaner, general household cleaner (a la Pine Sol), and there's plenty more uses I haven't tried. Last but not least, the bottle, covered with Dr. Bronner's All-one philosophy, is a conversation piece to say the least. However, the previous reviewer was right - tea tree flavor smells exactly like turpentine. I used my bottle as a laundry stain remover (works great, btw) because I couldn't bear to put it on my skin or have my house or dishes smelling like it, and thankfully my regular laundry soap killed the smell. I highly recommend getting another flavor - Almond seems to be all-around favorite, Peppermint is super invigorating and Mild Baby is virtually odorless. I prefer Lavender and the new Rose flavor because they're girly, but really, any of them are better than this.
Awful! Smells like turpentine!! AVOID THIS!!! November 7, 2008 Gordon M. Wagner (Suburbia) 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
I loved Dr. Bronner's soap and I have enjoyed tea tree varieties of other personal care products -- this, however, smells like nothing as much as turpentine! Paint thinner! It's dreadful! What a disappointment!!! Stick with Dr. Bronner's almond soap instead, it's infinitely easier on the nose! I literally poured these down the sink and recycled the containers!
